RCP Singh, a close confidant of Bihar’s chief minister Nitish Kumar, was elected on Sunday as the new president of Janata Dal (United). Kumar had proposed Singh’s name for the highest post, which was later approved by other members during the party’s national executive meeting, a senior leader told PTI.
The prime minister, who was re-elected as chairman of JD (U) in 2019 for three years, resigned in favor of Singh, its leader in Rajya Sabha.
Singh, a bureaucrat turned politician, was until now the general secretary of the regional party.
The JD (U) is holding its national executive meeting to deliberate on issues related to the political situation in the country, after six of the party’s seven MLAs passed to the BJP.
Polls in neighboring West Bengal were also discussed at the meeting, the senior leader said.
