The dean of the Faculty of Engineering at Jadavpur University, Amitava Datta, resigned from office on Tuesday citing health problems.
In a letter to Vice Chancellor Suranjan Das, Datta asked him to accept his resignation letter with immediate effect while offering his support to the university to the best of his ability.
Datta, who joined as dean on December 7 this year, said in the letter that “due to some personal reasons and health issues, it is becoming difficult for me to continue working in this position effectively.” “Therefore, I present my resignation as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology with immediate effect,” he said.
Earlier this month, the (acting) dean of Sciences, Professor Subir Mukhopadhyay, resigned from office citing humiliation by the student union.
While VC Das said he was busy in a meeting when contacted, the Bengal University Teachers Association (JU unit) expressed concern about the “unprecedented anarchic situation when one dean after another resigned and the VC and Pro- VC had recently expressed their desire to quit smoking, but were convinced. “Alleging that a section of students is” unethically and illegally interfering with semester exams and the results publication process “and resorting to the gherao of senior officials , ABUTA leader and senior university professor Goutam Maity demanded proper administrative action on the matter.
Last week, a section of students from the faculty of engineering and technology had gheraoed the VC, Pro-VC and other senior officials for approximately 12 hours on the subject of the comprehensive and total publication of the results of the last semester after 11 months and for students to trust the entire process.
