The Gujarat government will receive Rs 180 crore from the Center during this financial year under the recently announced post-matriculation scholarship scheme for Programmed Caste (SC) students, a minister said on Wednesday.
In December of last year, the Union Cabinet approved Rs 59,000 crore for the post-matriculation scholarship for more than four crore SC students.
“Under the new pattern, the Center will spend 60 percent on scholarships, while each state’s participation is 40 percent,” State Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Ishwar Parmar said at a press conference at the state headquarters of the BJP in Gandhinagar.
“The committed annual liability of the Gujarat government for this scheme was Rs 309.43 crore. Of this, the Center gave us 15 million rupees as part of the previous fiscal year. Now, after this announcement by the Center, Gujarat will get 180 crore rupees in the current financial year 2020-21, which is an increase of almost 12.5 times, ”he said.
“Rs 15 crore from the Center was only 4.85 per cent of our committed liability of Rs 309.43 crore. Now, the participation of the Union government increased to 60 percent, while the state has to disburse 40 percent, ”added Parmar.
Gujarat BJP President CR Paatil, who was present on the occasion, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for making a decision “for the well-being of the students of the SC community”.
“The state never received more than Rs 20 million from the Center on average for a post-matrix scholarship. Now, with the approval of Rs 59,000 crore by the Center, we will receive Rs 180 crore, a 12-fold increase in funds to provide scholarships to South Carolina students, ”he added.
