College of Engineering Trivandrum gets patent for wall climbing robot – education

The Trivandrum College of Engineering (CET) obtained a patent for a multipurpose wall climbing robot that uses a duct fan mechanism for inspection of cracks in concrete structures.

According to CET, compared to existing wall climbing mechanisms, this provides faster movement and has better load capacity. The robot can move both on the floor and on the wall like a normal four-wheeler.

“Inspection work for huge concrete structures can be done faster and more accurately with this cordless wall climbing robot rather than the tedious way for workers to inspect,” said Praveen Sekhar, one of the team’s students. who developed the prototype.

He said that the robot’s movement and payload operation can be monitored with someone sitting at a distance of one km with a personal computer or even recorded and analyzed at a later stage.

A working prototype is available from the Department of Electronics and Communication at the Trivandrum College of Engineering.

“This was done as part of a senior engineering project in 2014. In 2013-14, one of the social causes that bothered us was the stability of the Mullaperiyar dam. There was no inexpensive mechanism available to inspect the surface of the dam for developed cracks or other damage. This gave us an idea to create something that can be used to scale the walls of the dam and capture images on a regular basis that can be processed to control the dam and also adequately report its stability, ”added Sekhar. .

Now, the team that developed the robot is exploring the possibilities of product marketing.
